CEO Update August 2021 |  Paul Head

Posted 24 August 2021.

Kia ora and welcome to another update from the team at the Comms Council – a lot has changed since our last one.

The fact that we’re back in lockdown shows just how tricky this virus is to manage, and in that respect the fatalistic amongst us would say that it was probably inevitable. Which doesn’t make it any easier.

When we went into the first level 4 lockdown last year there was a real sense of fear amongst the people I spoke to. Fear at what the virus might do, fear at how it would impact businesses and the economy (Armageddon) and fear for our people. So much was unknown.

But 18 months on we know much more than we did in April last year and there’s a different mood I detect. We know we can get the virus under control. Businesses will survive and the economy will bounce back. What I’m hearing therefore is a sense of frustration that we find ourselves in this position again and more importantly a real concern from leadership about our people who have worked so hard all year and now find themselves in lockdown again. I’m hearing this is even more challenging for parents with kids at home.

So let’s make sure we remember the learnings from last year – block out “no zoom” time in the diary, take regular breaks, get some exercise every day, make time to socialise virtually with your colleagues but then create a clear delineation between work time and home time.

The Comms Council team and I are here to help in any way we can, so please let us know if there’s anything we can do.

We’ve been here before and we’ll get through it again.
